BMW 118d Coupe - Review

For the new model year, BMW has undergone the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible rejuvenation. We have tested the cheapest option for you.

Since 2007, there is also a coupe version of the 1-series BMW. For model year 2011, the Bavarians have missed the smallest family member of a facelift. With a new front air dam, restyled headlights and taillights, and some new bodywork and upholstery colors of the athletic Bayer will start the race at the buyer's favor. The new look is the small Bavarian doing very well. The redesign of the front end gives the 1 Series coupe even more dynamic appearance.

For our test, we have the entry level model, the 118d Coupe chosen to see if even the base of the famous "Ultimate Driving Machine" brings. With € 29 450, one should expect even the basic version. Adding then the obligatory Austria Package (includes ski bag, multifunction leather sports steering wheel, 17 "alloy wheels, sport seats, Park Distance Control, rear, rain sensor, cruise control, light package, interior trim black, high gloss, auto-dimming inside mirror and an automatic climate control) and a Servotronic, Heated seats, the BMW Professional radio with USB port and Xenon headlights add the result is a total price of the test cars from € 36 648.

A steep price, but underlines the premium quality of BMW in the compact class. Anyone who spends so much money expected, of course, a corresponding value, and the 1 Series Coupe has in any case.

The consumer (4 / 2010) compared motor liability insurance in bonus level 00 and Zurich Connect voted after three consecutive awards in the test winner.

Already at the first seating test it is found that the materials used in the interior are very high, and the processing gives the impression that vibrate even on the roughest roads in the world or nothing will rattle.

The design of the dashboard is kept in the style of BMW, even here, the customer must make compromises. All functions are self explanatory, and the operation is easy and intuitive. Then there are the excellent sports seats with adjustment for all tastes and offers the perfect solution to treat well over long distances with high comfort.

The space is excellent in the first row, but behind it is cramped for tall, and access is also very difficult. But anyway, a coupe is generally utilized only in pairs, and a pinch it works well on the back seat. The trunk volume is 370 liters with properly sized also great, and many in the interior shelves provide plenty of room for odds and ends.

Convince the small BMW is also the background noise, even at motorway speeds you can hear almost no wind, roll-off or engine noise. Only when you start or hard acceleration you realize that a diesel engine located under the hood to send. Who believes, however, that a 1.8 liter engine under the hood werkt, is wrong.

Namely Gone are the days where you could find at the basis of the BMW model designation, the liter-engine performance. Namely, the 118d has a 1.8 liter engine is not, but over a 2.0-liter diesel engine. The performance of the common-rail diesel engine with turbocharger located at 143 hp (105 kW) and lends the Coupe in 9.0 seconds from standstill to 100 km / h. Those who wish can 118d with the speed of 210 km / h. road. The torque of 300 Nm is available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm / min, enabling even at low speeds enough torque.

We were surprised by the long gearing of the manual six-speed manual transmission. Normally, the diesel models have a rather short tiered gear designed with any long sixth Transition, which is economical even at low speed may be traveling in a high gear.

Anyone who thinks the 1 Series Coupe, at 80 km / h early as the sixth Want to switch course, is reminded of the recommended gear indicator, but rather in the 5th To be on the road course. Even at 50 km / h you may be in the 3rd Gear drive, without a recommendation, 4 Lit course to take, would. Thus, one can also be very lazy way switching, where the aisles are so easy to sort that one even as automatic fan finds his pleasure in it.

Between Innsbruck and the Brenner is Wipptal lead of the five scenic valleys in the glaciers of the Stubai Alps and Zillertal. Hiking and mountain lovers will especially get their money, with 500 km of marked hiking trails, 25 alpine huts and mountain hikes, and special topics.

Even if you switch the recommendation and has always followed the coupe on the "Efficient Dynamics" technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration, or start / stop system, it is difficult to obtain from the plant indicated consumption of 4.5 liters. On average, our still very new test car has approved 6.0 liters diesel per 100 kilometers, which is in view of performance and driving pleasure but in order.

Shine, the sporty coupe with the driving dynamics. The 118d can be moved very easily, but when it does, the true sports champion. The suspension reacts correctly to the next tight and fast cornering and the steering wheel follows every little move quickly and confidently. On winding country roads, the lively Bayer feels most comfortable, although he also does on the highway and in town a good figure.

With the 118d Coupe, BMW offers an interesting entry into the Coupe variant world that has offered in the base much fun and can keep up with the quality of its big brothers with no problems. As high as the quality and driving pleasure, the price is - good but was just always a bit more expensive.
